The day

Hour by hour

The big one. Twelve hours covering Iceland's South Coast — four iconic sights plus a guided glacier hike on Sólheimajökull. The hike is the centrepiece: crampons, ice axe, helmet, two hours walking on a real glacier. The kids will remember this for the rest of their lives.

08:00 · Pickup window opens

Tröll Expeditions van

Bus Stop 6, The Culture House, Hverfisgata 15, same stop as Day 16. Pickup is from 08:00 and the van can arrive any time up to 08:30. Eat your pastry while you wait. Vehicle marked “Troll Expeditions”.

Morning
Waterfalls
09:30 · Seljalandsfoss

Walk behind the falls

First stop. 60m drop. The unique thing here is you can walk behind the curtain — wet trail, slippery, worth doing. 30 min stop.

10:30 · Skógafoss

Bigger, broader

20 min drive. 60m drop, 25m wide. You can climb a steep staircase to the top for a different view. Strong rainbow on sunny days.

Afternoon
Black sand and ice
12:30 · Reynisfjara black sand beach

Basalt columns + sea stacks

Iceland's most photographed beach. Black volcanic sand, hexagonal basalt columns, dramatic sea stacks. Important: stay back from the water — sneaker waves kill people here every year. Lunch nearby in Vík.

14:00 · Vík village

Lunch + bathroom break

Tiny village, the southernmost in Iceland. Restaurant Suður-Vík for sit-down, or Skool Beans coffee shop. Quick stop.

15:00 · Sólheimajökull glacier

Gear up

Drive to the glacier base, gear up: helmet, harness, crampons, ice axe. Safety briefing. Group ratio is small — 8-12 people per guide.

15:30 · Glacier hike

2 hours on the ice

Strap on crampons and walk onto an actual glacier. Surreal — blue ice, crevasses, ash bands from past volcanic eruptions, glacier mice. Guide-led, varied pace, photo stops. Genuinely unlike anything else you'll do.

17:30 · Off the ice

Hot chocolate, debrief

Gear off, hot chocolate provided. Long drive back to Reykjavík begins.

19:30 · Back in Reykjavík

Drop-off near hotel

Final tour drop-off. Tired, hungry, full of adrenaline.

20:30 · Dinner

Tres Locos

Mexican in the city centre, tacos, burritos, margaritas. Lively and fun after a big day out. Book ahead.

South Coast day

All booked through Tröll Expeditions. The glacier hike is the standout but the four South Coast sights frame it perfectly, waterfalls, black beach, ice. Best Iceland day many people have.

Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull

2 hours on a real glacier · Crampons + ice axe

The single most memorable thing the kids will do this trip. Two hours guided walking on Sólheimajökull glacier — strapped into crampons, swinging an ice axe, walking past blue crevasses and ash bands. Not technical (no climbing, no ropes), but very real. Min age 8 — both kids qualify. Gear all provided.

Dramatic scenery

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Basalt columns · Crashing Atlantic surf

One of the most dramatic beaches on earth. Jet-black volcanic sand, towering basalt column stacks at Reynisdrangar, and waves that arrive unbroken from Greenland. Stay back from the water — sneaker waves here are genuinely dangerous. Best photographed in any weather; moody overcast days make it even more striking.

Mexican in Reykjavík City Centre Tacos & burritos Margaritas & cocktails Family-friendly Lively atmosphere

Tres Locos brings bold Mexican flavours to the heart of Reykjavík, a lively, colourful spot that’s a welcome change of pace after days of Icelandic fish and lamb. Tacos, burritos, and loaded nachos alongside proper margaritas and an energetic atmosphere that kids and adults both love.

After a long day on the south coast, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, the glacier, this is exactly the right energy for the evening. Loud, fun, and filling.

What to order

Go for the tacos, order a few different fillings to share around the table. The nachos are a solid starter. Margaritas for the adults; plenty of non-alcoholic options too. Don’t over-order, the portions are generous.

Logistics

What to actually know

A 12-hour day with cold + wet conditions and physical activity. The packing list matters more than usual today.

Layers + gear

  • Base layer (merino if you have it)
  • Mid-layer fleece or wool
  • Waterproof outer jacket (non-negotiable)
  • Waterproof trousers (highly recommended)
  • Sturdy hiking boots — not trainers
  • Beanie + warm gloves (yes, in July)

What to bring

  • Snacks — long day, lunch stops are basic
  • 1L water per person minimum
  • Phone fully charged + battery pack
  • Sunglasses (glacier glare is intense)
  • Sunscreen (you can burn even in cool weather)
  • Small day pack

Glacier safety

  • Listen to the guide — glaciers move and change
  • Stay on the marked route
  • Crampons are easy once you're walking
  • Ice axe is mostly for balance
  • Tell guide immediately if anyone feels unwell
  • Photos: keep one hand free for the axe
