Walk out of the hotel and cross Knippelsbro. As you cross, look left, the angular black granite building on the water is the Black Diamond, the modern Royal Library extension. Keep walking straight ahead into Slotsholmen.

Børsen

The dragon-tail spire, and the container exhibition

Walk past the Børsen, the Old Stock Exchange (1625) with the famous four-dragon-tail spire. The building was damaged in a 2024 fire and there’s currently a visitor exhibition in containers outside about the rebuilding effort. Worth a quick look.

Christiansborg Palace

The seat of Danish Parliament, walk straight through

You’re walking through the centre of Slotsholmen, the island that holds the Danish Parliament (Folketing) inside Christiansborg Palace. Walk through the inner courtyard and out the back gate.

Højbro Plads

The jazz square, Spirit of New Orleans was here last night

Emerge from the courtyard gate onto Højbro Plads. This is where the jazz was last night. Head north up Købmagergade, the wide pedestrian street.

A quiet morning wander through Kongens Have, Copenhagen’s oldest royal park, dating to 1606. The Dutch Renaissance castle sits at the centre with its formal gardens. Free to walk through. No museum entry needed, just 25 minutes enjoying the park and the castle exterior before moving on.

Europe’s oldest functioning observatory, built 1642. Wide cobbled spiral ramp winds 7.5 turns to the top, built wide enough for a horse and carriage. A Russian Tsar rode his horse up it. Clear views across the whole city. DKK 40 adults, kids free. 45 minutes.

Europe’s oldest functioning observatory. The design is the thing: instead of stairs, a wide cobbled spiral ramp winds 7.5 turns to the top, originally wide enough for a horse and carriage. A Russian Tsar reportedly rode his horse to the top. From the platform, a 360-degree view across the whole of Copenhagen. Under-18s free.

One of Copenhagen’s best coffee spots and most of the city doesn’t know it’s there. Tucked inside the central public library, a beautiful, calm space. Order the cardamom bun and a flat white. Sit down properly, rest the legs after the tower climb. 20–25 minutes then straight into the Latin Quarter.

The park opens into a completely different world after dark. Hit The Demon and The Star Flyer while the sun is still setting, great views from the top. Then from around 21:45 the illuminations transform everything: the Chinese Tower, the Open Air Stage, the lake. It’s genuinely unlike any other theme park experience. Stay until close.

Two genuinely good options inside the park, no need to leave Tivoli and come back. Hallernes Smørrebrød does proper Danish open sandwiches: herring, roast beef, smoked salmon on dark rye. If you want something familiar and quick, Gorm’s is right there with sourdough pizza and proper toppings, reliably good, easy with kids. Eat by 20:00 so you have the full evening on the rides and illuminations.
